Lab Work

 Oceanographic Sampling

I am sampling from the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier 2x a week and performing dedicated cruises to known Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZs) to measure the microbial community and their metabolic fluxes across seasons and oxygen concentrations

Field Work

Quantifying Marine Microbial Metabolism

In the lab, I use High Pressure Liquid Chromatography and radiolabeled phosphate analyses to quantify microbial community metabolism through the adenylate energy system, including adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Predictive Models of Microbial Metabolism

Predictive models of microbial metabolism will be developed using self-organizing maps (SOMs) and random forest regression based on community structure, abundance, and geochemical parameters across time and within known oxygen minimum zones (OMZs).
